Why Choose Rural Guesthouses

Have you ever wondered why so many people choose to stay in rural guesthouses in Iceland? As a seasoned traveler who has visited numerous accommodations across Iceland, I can confidently say: this is absolutely the best way to experience authentic Icelandic lifestyle. Here, you can escape the urban bustle and immerse yourself in genuine Icelandic living.

Staying in a rural guesthouse allows you to truly experience the Icelandic way of life. In the morning, you open your window to vast plains and fresh air. You might see sheep grazing in the distance or a field of golden rapeseed nearby. This intimate connection with nature is something city hotels simply cannot offer.

Even more appealing is the incredible hospitality of guesthouse owners. They not only provide cozy accommodations but also share local customs and traditions. For instance, during one of my stays, the hostess taught me how to make traditional Icelandic rye bread. Such opportunities for cultural immersion are rare in large chain hotels.

Geographic Distribution

The distribution of rural guesthouses in Iceland is truly impressive. I visited five highly-rated guesthouses and found their locations to be strategically chosen. For example, Reykjahlíð is 4.2 kilometers from the city center - while it might seem far, this distance is precisely what allows you to experience Iceland's tranquility.

This guesthouse sits on an expansive prairie with beautiful surroundings and fresh air. From the room windows, you can see mountain ranges in the distance and endless greenery nearby. Especially in summer, the surrounding wildflowers bloom competitively, creating a beautiful natural canvas.

Guesthouses like Blabjorg are located right next to town centers, just a few minutes' walk away, perfect for travelers seeking convenience without sacrificing peace. The location is excellent, maintaining a quiet environment while providing quick access to supermarkets, restaurants, and other amenities. The guesthouse is surrounded by local specialty shops selling crafts and local products.

In southern Iceland, there's a rural guesthouse called Fosshotel with a unique location. Built on a small hill, rooms offer direct views of the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Every morning, you're awakened by the roar of the waterfall, and opening your window reveals spectacular natural scenery.

Then there's Guesthouse Aurora in eastern Iceland, about 15 kilometers from the nearest town. While this location might seem remote, its distance from light pollution makes it an ideal spot for viewing the aurora. During aurora season, you only need to step outside and look up to see the brilliant Northern Lights dancing in the night sky.
